Several day-long itineraries.

In the footsteps of the pedlars and smugglers

This itinerary will take you to the Refuge of Vanoise Pass via Vaches Lake and along the paths once trodden by pedlars and smugglers on their way to Italy. Your walk will begin at Barioz Square which takes its name from the customs dues paid by the pedlars at this place (‘barioz’ means ‘gate’ in the local patois dialect).

However, you can also take the Mont-Bochor cable car to reduce the length of your walk.

You must allow 4 hours for the ascent. The walk is not very difficult but you must prepare yourself with some short walks so as to not suffer too much from fatigue.

Meet the Marmots and the Ibex

This walk takes you to see the animals, especially the Ibex Antelope, emblem of Pralognan-la-Vanoise. It is an easy walk apart from a few steep passages. To follow this route, go to Pêche Bridge car park. Once at the car park, follow the road and take the track on the left (it is less steep than the right hand one). It will lead you to the Pêche Rock Refuge, upon arrival at the refuge keep a good eye out for the marmots there to welcome you. From the Pêche Rock Refuge, you can descend to the car park along the track that completes the circuit. Equally, you can carry on towards the Péclet-Polset Refuge by following the GR55 trail. While descending along the left bank (the left hand side when looking downstream) of the Doron-de-Chavière, you may well see some ibex antelopes on your left.

The Génépi Glacier

This itinerary begins at the same place as the preceding one, however at Montaimont the walker must not continue to Pêche Rock Refuge but take the rising track that runs past the Vanoise National Park House. This path lets you admire the Génépi Glacier in an enchanting setting.

A day trip...

For those who are more experienced and wish to make a day trip, the Little Mont-Blanc is an ideal hike. There are two possibilities:

  • Either you leave from Pralognan-la-Vanoise: Take the track that leads to the village of Chollière, the track leading to Little Mont-Blanc crossing the road which goes to Pêche Bridge car park. But watch out, the early stages of the path are quite steep (particularly the passage in the forest) and require stout walking shoes because of the roots and pine cones that litter the ground.

  • Or you leave from Pêche Bridge car park: take the GR55 trail (along the left bank of the Doron-de-Chavière), the track leading to Little Mont-Blanc is on your right (it crosses straight through the mountain).

Do you know how the Little Mont-Blanc got its name? Simply because the summit is made of gypsum, a white stone that makes it resemble Mont-Blanc.

There is not enough space here to list all the possible walks as there are so many! To learn more about the walks on offer around Pralognan-la-Vanoise, simply visit the Tourist Office and obtain a Mountain Paths Map.

For long-haul hiking enthusiasts, there are many refuges around Pralognan-la-Vanoise to help you undertake hikes lasting several days to places where few people go.

The Vanoise Glacier Race

The most famous of these long-haul hikes is undoubtedly the Vanoise Glacier Race. You will find it mentioned in all the hiking books as one of the most beautiful hikes in France. The hike takes 4 or 5 days with overnight stays in the refuges of Vanoise Pass, Arpont, Plan-Sec, Orgère (and not forgetting Péclet-Polset and Pêche Rock). This hike is complementary to the race that we organize every year in early July, the Vanoise Glacier Race.
