Les Prioux: Sentier du Lièvre (“Jackrabbit Trail”)

On this family hike starting in Les Prioux enjoy fantastic views of Chavière Valley and the seracs from the glacier capping Dôme des Nants.

Take the balcony path and enjoy the panoramic view of Les Prioux, the Chavière valley and the Dôme des Nants glacier bar. Estimated by local guides to be no more than 30 metres high by 2023, the bar of seracs (slices of ice corresponding to the fragmentation of the glacier) has lost more than 40 metres since the end of the 1980s. A major loss linked to climate change. On the opposite slope, look out for the “murgers”, small dry-stone walls used to demarcate properties or areas of “arable” land. The stones are regularly collected after the winter months, after erosion phenomena such as rockfalls and avalanches.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step :

1. Go through the hamlet of Les Prioux and follow the route up on the left (path no. 59) from the Prioux pastoral road.
2. After a short climb through a lush green combe, crossed twice by the “creuse” of Les Prioux, take the balcony path on the left, which winds through an open woodland of mainly hooked pines, also known as mountain pines.
3. At the crossroads, descend the path back to the Prioux hamlet via the Passerelle des Anciens (path no. 58). Before reaching the Passerelle des Anciens, turn left onto the Promenade Savoyarde de Découverte path, which crosses the meadows along the Doron de Chavière.
