Pralognan: one of the oldest village resorts in the northern Alps

Village station de montagne

A mountain village in the French Alps, inhabited since the 12th century, Pralognan-la-Vanoise was originally a small, everyday alpine village. Adapted to the seasons, life in Pralognan revolved primarily around livestock farming and milk production. In summer, the Col de la Vanoise, the nerve center of the Alps, creates a picturesque ballet, where locals and passersby meet and wander together for a moment.

Pralognan’s tourist destiny began with the beginnings of mountaineering in August 1860. That year, a young English climber, William Mathews, conquered the Grande Casse, the highest peak in the Vanoise (and Savoie) region. Then, at the end of the century, the first skis appeared, and in the winter of 1954, the opening of the Mont-Bochor cable car definitively established Pralognan as a village ski resort in the Alps.

Living to the rhythm of the summer and then winter seasons for over five generations, Pralognan-la-Vanoise is one of the oldest small ski resorts in the Alps. An authentic, family-friendly village resort in Savoie, “Pralo,” as the locals call it, is a beloved destination, a place to live, where residents and vacationers alike love to gather, winter and summer alike.
